It all began with a post at UNEASYsilence titled "Lies, Lies and Adobe Spies" which caught on to the fact that Adobe CS3 apps were calling out to a suspiciously-crafted IP address. As it turns out, the IP in question—192.168.112.2O7.net (note the capital O instead of a zero)—is not an IP at all, but rather a domain owned by statistics-tracking firm Omniture.

Just what is Adobe doing?

I've mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. Adobe offers a bevy of video tutorials for all the CS3 products at the Adobe Video Workshop section. Definitely worth checking out!

The one thing that I LOVE about Firefox, what drove me to use it instead of Safari, are add-on extensions. There's an extension for everything. Google recently announced that they're working on the ability to have add-ons in their recently released Web browser, Chrome.

It was clear that the prototype was still a disaster. It wasn't just buggy, it flat-out didn't work. The iPhone dropped calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and applications routinely became corrupted and unusable. The list of problems seemed endless. At the end of the demo, Jobs fixed the dozen or so people in the room with a level stare and said, "We don't have a product yet."

That was then.

A panorama is simply a wide-angled view of a physical space. To the photographer a panorama is usually several photographs that are stitched together horizontally to create a seamless picture.

This simple tutorial from Digital Photography Studio will show you how.

In the beginning, there was not light on the web. It was awfully crowded with dancing marquees, tedious frames, unbearable midis and annoying spinning @’s. It was the dark ages of the web. Then refreshing empty spaces, vibrant, high contrast colors, lovely gradients, big text, original gloss shine effect, diagonal lines and of course reflected logos came on our rescue. Everything was shiny and with that great brandnu smell. The Web 2.0 look was born.

But guess what? There are some people getting tired of that.

For a high-profile, award-winning app from one of the biggest software companies out there, the out-of-the-box experience for the new Adobe Photoshop Elements is crappy. Really, it’s the worst I’ve seen in ages. So I had to write this post to complain about it, of course.

The repetitive nature of Web site production is certainly not as fun as the initial creative design process. This is especially true on large sites, where most pages share the same look -- navigation bar, copyright, sidebars, and many other page elements remain identical across all of the pages of your site -- so much of the creative process is over. Fortunately, if you use Dreamweaver, a lot of the pain of building and maintaining a Web site can be eliminated by using Dreamweaver's timesaving Template tools.

Steve Jobs is leaving Apple. Not tomorrow, but probably very soon. That's why he started to say good bye today, doing something more important than just presenting new MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and an updated MacBook Air. Today's event was a play in which he clearly told everyone that the company is more than himself.

The best feature of Jungle Disk Desktop (an online storage system) is the fact that your Jungle Disk mounts just like your iDisk - allowing you to access your files directly from the Finder. Drag and drop, copy and delete. You can use your Jungle Disk just like any other hard drive.

Although the price might turn some people away (read: it’s cheap but not free) the pricing structure allows you to pay for only what you use since the application uses Amazon’s S3 internet storage service. After the one-time purchase of $20, this translates into $0.15 per GB-Month of storage used, $0.10 per GB of data uploaded, and $0.17 per GB of data downloaded.

Talking about Screen Sharing, the reflection of iChat shouldn't be far away from your mind. Actually, the Screen Sharing itself is provided in your Finder. This article will show you where the Screen Sharing app is located, and how to get more out of it.

It includes beams like those from spotlights, sunlight like you would see coming through branches, lighthouse light beams, sunburst type effects (full circles as well as half and three quarters of the burst), and even some particles to add to your beams of light to make it look like floating dust. These are extremely high resolution, averaging about 2250 pixels in size.

NBC dumped Microsoft Silverlight for NFL game streaming in favor of Adobe Flash. The results after the first game of 2008 this past Thursday night was a disaster. Choppy, unwatchable video was all users got.

I love Adobe, but I think this was a huge mistake. I watched a few Olympic events on NBC.com and was completely taken by surprise at how great Microsoft Silverlight worked out. I had to download the plugin, which took just a few seconds, and install first, but it was no problem at all. The video quality was superb, and I never experienced choppy, unwatchable video. Not once.

Flash, on the other hand, virtually guarantees studdering, grainy, generally poor quality video. At least in streaming content.

I realize that it really comes down to the quality of the encoding work, but I can't help but to think that the technology used in Silverlight is just better.

A quick tutorial for creating down & dirty rusted metal in Adobe Photoshop.

I noticed this quite by accident the other day while rendering out
an After Effects animation I had done. I had made a spelling change in
one of the graphics, and re-rendered a composition I had rendered the
day before. When it was finished, I noticed in the Render Queue that it
had taken 15 minutes longer to render than it had the day before. This
seemed odd to me, as like I said, all I had done was changed the
spelling of one word in the animation. It turns out that Safari is responsible. Read on for tests and explanation.

Web 2.0 as a style is not dead, far from it. Styles don't die. If anything they percolate and then fuse into other styles. They get absorbed by the forward movement of design trends. Photofont® technology brings that same creative power to traditional print and web applications. Photofonts allow users to break free from the traditional black-and-white lettering and use fonts that are made of real calligraphic brush strokes, everyday objects, scanned historical documents or felt pen doodles. But of course the Photofont® technology can also work with traditional fonts that have a “plain” typographic look. Photofonts are not only fun but also open serious business opportunities for example in the field of personalized marketing.

The simple fact is that most sunset photos end up looking like — well — just about every other sunset image that’s out there: a big reddish-orange ball hits the horizon, while nearby ridgelines, trees, pets, and romantic couples all get turned into dark silhouettes. Aesthetically, it might all look quite good, but usually there’s nothing to differentiate any one particular image from the millions of other sunset shots that are out on the web (or in your grandparents old collection of slides).

I always check here first when looking for pre-made vector art. The large collection (growing constantly) of vector art is submitted by users around the globe. Be sure to check for any specific license requirements before using any artwork - but most is free to use commercially.

Verisign has acquired the .name domain extension, but does anyone care? I never liked it, but that's just me.

Viewing fonts doesn't require an extra application. Check it out!

I'm so confused... just what version of Windows is old, new, improved? I just don't get it.

Americans today spend almost as much on bandwidth – the capacity to move information – as we do on energy. A family of four likely spends several hundred dollars a month on cell phones, cable television and Internet connections, which is about what we spend on gas and heating oil.

Business cards are as obsolete as fax machines. And like fax machines, business cards have us still using paper to move electronic data from one digital system to another.

When I wrote the first version of this article six years ago, I called it “Why Free Software usability tends to suck”. The best open source applications and operating systems are more usable now than they were then. But this is largely from slow incremental improvements, and low-level competition between projects and distributors. Major problems with the design process itself remain largely unfixed.

Many of these problems are with volunteer software in general, not Free Software in particular.

Matthew Paul Thomas discusses free software development, why it has poor usability, and what to do to fix it.

For example, Bach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 on 256-bit DRM-free MP3 is just $9.99 from Amazon. The same album is also $9.99 from Apple, but you get DRM. And there are tons of tracks on Amazon that are actually less expensive than on iTMS, so you get better music for less money without the DRM hassle. So is Apple screwing the customers?

In a word, no.

The desktop has historically been the leader in the computing business, but in recent years, the notebook has taken charge. And as that changeover continues to progress, is it time to write off the desktop?

The uber-cool You Suck at Photoshop series of video tutorials. Funny and informative. 10 episodes so far and they're not to be missed.

“You Suck at Web Design” is a humorous (attempting to be, that is) writing project about life as a web designer in our current flurry of web acronyms, standards compliance, WYSIWYG, style sheets, hacks, digging, 2.0-this and Ajax-that. It’s mostly a commentary on the life of a freelancer, and a horribly lop-side disdain for the corportate world and it’s micro management.

The site looks fantastic and has plenty of visual goodness in the form of videos and more.
