As most of us had guessed a few years ago, Adobe has finally killed off GoLive in favor of Dreamweaver.
For many professional Web designers, this is really no news. But for thousands upon thousands of "one or two small sites per year" designers, this is horrible. If you learned using GoLive, the switch to Dreamweaver for those one or two sites per year you design will be a huge uphill battle. I recently tried to build a 3 page site and couldn't even immediately see how to code a rollover navigation. Dreamweaver is absolutely NOTHING like GoLive.

Uhg
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 06:19 — Jon (not verified)I knew this was coming. I am still using GoLive because I have so many plugins and scripts that I am familiar with. I guess I will just have to bit-the-bullet and use Dreamweaver. Programs come and programs go. The switch to Dreamweaver won't be the last, there will always be something new.
I still have my site on
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 06:51 — Carol (not verified)I still have my site on GoLive and am struggling to learn Dreamweaver (and CSS, which seems to be mandatory in order to use Dreamweaver). Dreamweaver is very counter-intuitive and has been really hard for me to learn.
The only thing I can hope is that future versions of Dreamweaver will adopt some of the good elements of GoLive.
goLove dead
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 07:15 — jason (not verified)i switched to dreamweaver about 6 months ago. i built the above site in golive but i hand coded all of the css. it was a huge step to learn a new piece of software but i saw the writing on the wall. i know that i am still not using the power of DW like i could with GL but hey that is why i like this gig. it allows me to keep learning and growing.
Oh I'm so glad to hear it's
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 08:15 — joecab (not verified)Oh I'm so glad to hear it's not just me. I don't create enough sites a year to make learning Dreamweaver worth my time. It's way too much for the HTML I need to do. I'm still putting off learning it a while longer.
This is horrible
Mon, 04/28/2008 - 08:16 — Rick (not verified)I knew it was coming. But it's horrible news for those who liked the simplicity of GoLive vs. the gigantic learning curve of DW.
Time well spent...
Tue, 04/29/2008 - 02:11 — Weon (not verified)How about instead of spending time learning DW you spend the time learning how to code by hand? That way, no matter what package you use you are able to dive straight in and start coding AND ensure you are creating standards compliant sites.
I found the switch from GL to DW a problem for about a day until I had figured out how to set up projects, where my code view was and how to use the simple objects palette.
WYSIWYG is no substitute for properly hand-coded and tested sites.
Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.
I know you've used it, but I
Fri, 05/02/2008 - 16:33 — ivan@creativebi...I know you've used it, but I never even tried it. So, not a loss for me. :)
