Suitcase vs. Font Agent Pro - what do you use?

I saw the review on the front page of Font Agent Pro recently, and was wondering if there was anyone who could offer more comments along the lines of Suitcase vs. Font Agent Pro.

What are the speed differences? Usability? Feature differences, etc?

Most reviews I read are either one camp or the other, but I rarely see a complete "side-by-side" comparison.

Anyone here use both a lot and choose one over the other? Why?

Made the switch from

Made the switch from Suitcase to Font Agent Pro a couple of years ago to avoid some font problems I had in Quark XPress.
Never switch back since then; Font Agent Pro runs so smooth in the background that you remember you've got a font manager just when you need to look at your font library!

Suitcase Fusion

It's funny 'cos I went the other way - from FAP to Suitcase - due to problems with auto-activation in Adobe programs. Suitcase Fusion is totally unobtrusive, works really, really well, and always opens the right font at the right time. It's quick to activate and deactivate fonts, and to add fonts is a doddle. There's a few niggles, but by and large it's pretty bloody good.

Oh, and backing up your fonts is easy too, due to the font vault.

What such problems?

I'm just curious because I only had a few Photoshop activation issues with some of the earlier version of FAP...

Nothing since, obviously. :-)

Me and everybody at work

Me and everybody at work have made the switch from Suitecase to Linotype Fontexplorer, its free, stable and works very well with autoactivation with all adobe CS(3) apps, and with Quark also (those poor people ;-)

give it a try! its waay better than Suitecase...

Try for yourself

I would suggest you download the demo of FAP (I thought I saw in one of your past comments that you use Suitcase now, but maybe I'm wrong) and give it a try for yourself.

That being said, they're both very good applications. The problem is that most people are biased on way or the other - after all, you can only really use one at a time so most people will side with the one they chose.

I've used them all, though I haven't used FAP in a really long time - and only briefly then. I keep coming back to Suitcase. But FontExplorer is VERY good!

Exactly

>> after all, you can only really use one at a time >>

Exactly - if each font manager didn't have such a stranglehold on one's system, it might even be possible to use different managers for different projects. I'd love to give Suitcase and FontExplorer a true test run in my spare time, but unfortunately I use all my machines for some sort of work and I can't afford the time to undo everything & start over.

Sometimes ya just gotta go with what works 'the best' and stick with it...

I use Linotype Font Explorer

I use Linotype Font Explorer at home and Suitcase at work. Personally for the price, (FREE), Linotype Font Explorer is the best!!!! Works great, no problems. Very impressed.

I hate Suitcase. It's the

I hate Suitcase. It's the Quark of font management. We do a magazine, and to keep things clean and simple on our macs, we simply use FontBook. Of course we have a relatively stable set, but it gives us all we need and takes no RAM.

Windows side of the story

here in the pits we use apolisoft font fitting room deluxe. the best interface/user experience i've ever seen/experienced in a font manager.

btw, also hate suitcase even though the auto activation may spare some trouble...

FAP Has released CS3 application pluguns

Gave up on Suitcase a long time ago, and after trying the rest, we settled on FAP for its speed & lack of "issues".

Today I found out Insider released a full set of auto load plugins for all the CS3 and CS2 graphic apps (Illustrator, ID and Photoshop). I've loaded them into CS3, and so far no hiccups. Finally!

Lack of autoload in Adobe apps had been my one complaint about FAP, but now even this is solved.

Suitcase vs. Font Agent

I have used and even purchased both Suitcase and Font Agent. Before being taken by Extensis I preferred Font Reserve over Suitcase or Font Agent; But I now find Linotype Font Explorer to be the best stand alone font application. If I needed or used a font server I would find it hard to drop Font Explorer. Font Reserve was the only font application I never regretted spending money on, and I would be fine with paying for Font Explorer but it is even better for free.

Suitcase Fusion Vs Font Agent Pro

My company switched from Suitcase to FAP a couple years ago and we've had problems with stability and activating the correct fonts ever since. I recently convinced them to switch back to Suitcase Fusion when Suitcase Fusion 2 released (last month?) and I'm so glad they listened. You don't need the app running for fonts to be managed. Plugins work perfectly and the performance is wonderful. And the tear-off preview feature is pretty slick.

Life is good again!

Suitcase Fusion 2

I'm new to font management and stumbled across Font Agent Pro as I was doing my research...downloaded the demo and it was okay. The Indesign plug in gave me grief. FAP blasted Suitcase all over their website so I decided to give Suitcase Fusion 2 a try once my demo ran out. Publically blasting a competitor is extremely tacky.

So far, no issues with Fusion 2. The tear off panel is pretty cool too!

Upgrade to Suitcase Fusion 2 nightmares

I recently upgraded to QuarkXPress 8 (Mac) and then HAD to upgrade to Suitcase Fusion 2. Up until then I loved Fusion, worked great. But now some fonts don't automatically activate. I've been working with one of their tech support people for weeks and they seem to have no clue what the problem is. It may be a unique situation for me but I'm about to ditch Suitcase and give FontAgent Pro a chance.
