Sometimes a little info goes a long, long way. While you can do a Get Info (Command + i) on a selected file, it would be easier if you could see just a little info without the hassle of a keyboard command – such as how many files are contained in a particular folder, or the dimensions of an image file. Once again, Apple thought of the little things.
A quick visit to the Finder’s menubar does the trick! Simply go to View>Show View Options (or hit Command + J). In the View Options window about half-way down, click in the checkbox next to Show Item Info as seen in the screenshot at the right.
Once that option is activated in the Finder, you’ll notice information located just below the desktop icon file name colored in light blue. When you’re in icon view mode in a folder, which you can switch to by hitting Command + 1, you’ll see the info there too. As you can see in the screenshot at the left, you’ll get a quick glimpse of the number of items inside a folder, and the pixel dimensions of image files.
Not all document types display information, but these two in particular I find quite useful.
Ok, this post was helpful, but I actually have a further mystery… what do you do when a jpg saved from Photoshop just plain doesn’t display the dimensions… What I’m asking is not for a way to find the dimensions to this image… I can do that several ways. My question is why it isn’t showing already, and what to do to fix it. Thanks so much… Here’s the folder in icon view

I’m not sure what would cause it, but you could try deleting the .DS_Store file in the folder. You’ll have to enable viewing of hidden files in the Finder – which you can do with any number of apps such as Onyx (Free), or MacPilot, etc…
Helpful tip, although it looks as if you need to change the setting for every folder. Being a web designer you can imagine the state of my desktop. Is there a way to apply this to all folders?
Really?
Where do you see these dimensions? Love to see a screen shot… If you turn it on you see them on the desktop and in “icon” view (which I never use) but not in “list or column” view.

Sorry, should have been more clear. This tip ONLY works in icon view. Just in case you don’t know much about them (you probably do), I highly recommend you try either Apple Aperture or Adobe Lightroom. Both are excellent apps for photographers to manage their photo libraries – and might just be what you’re looking for.
Image dimensions ARE shown when in the Finder, both in windows or on the desktop. 😉
One thing I wish Apple would include in the finder view is to “show dimensions”…
For photographers it makes it easier to sort in the finder…
