Huge collection of grunge fonts available for download
If you read my article at Macworld about Bulking up your font collection, you’ve hopefully visited some of the great font sites available out there and found a few gems. One of the hardest type of fonts to find to your liking is really good grunge fonts. Many times they’re either overdone and too hard to read, or not “grungy” enough. Enter daFont member named Gyom Séguin (a.k.a. Last Soundtrack). This talented font designer has a collection of grunge fonts like none I’ve come across. Virtually every one of his over 30 grunge fonts is well-crafted and ready to use in your design, including the superb Bleeding Cowboys font seen in the sample above. NeatFonts – cool free fonts and previewing
neatfonts has an exhaustive collection of fonts collected from all over the Web, organized and ready for you to download. From what I can tell, all the fonts are TrueType and .zip compressed for easy download.
Free font: Dead Letter Office
One of my favorite sites to visit is One Digital Life. It’s not really a “design” site, but it’s just fun to read and every once in a while he posts a real gem. About a week ago, I came across such a gem in a post titled Dead Letter Office Font. While the font is quite a unique font and not for everyday use, I actually was looking for something like it just when I came across the post.
Free textures for use in Photoshop
TextureKing has over 250 freely downloadable textures for use with Photoshop, and appears to be adding more all the time. Many sites offer free textures, but I usually find that they’re incredibly lame and practically worthless. TextureKing, on the other hand, has some very good artwork that is quite useful in everyday professional projects.
Free online file storage and file sending
A while back, I posted an article about YouSendIt, a free e-mail-based file sending service. If you’ve ever had to send large files and don’t have access to FTP, or the person you’re sending to doesn’t, this type of service is a fantastic resource. Today, I have a list of 50 similar services that are absolutely free and require no e-mail registration to use. Included in the list are file size limits, download limits and the amount of time the file remains on the server for download. Some of these services will no doubt have updated or changed their services. Free stock photography at Absolute Vision
One of the many vital resources any designer makes use of is stock photography sites. We would all love to have the budget for a photoshoot on each job, but the reality is that 90% of the jobs out there have a budget more condusive to Royalty Free photos. The problem is, of course, that stock photos tend to get “old” quickly. You see the same photos being used everywhere. While I’m sure most designers know about Getty, Veer & Corbis, it’s the much smaller and specialized sites that can make or break your work – sites that don’t charge $500 for a single photo. The recent trend is going to the subscription model where you pay a flat fee per year for all the photos you want. One such site is AbsoluteVision which offers photos in the JPEG2000 format – which includes an alpha channel for “cutout” images, and custom drop/cast shadows for a realistic cutout photo. Did I also mention that AbsoluteVision offers a free photo download every week. You don’t even need to be a paying subscriber, just register and you’re off to build your own image library! My only “catch” is a warning to not go crazy with the royalty free photo use. Spend some time searching for just the right photo, with so many photo sites out there, I know you will eventually find it. Rushing through and picking a photo from the old PhotoDisc archives on Getty is a sure way to get people to laugh or ignore your 1970’s era photo in an add proclaiming how up-to-date your bank’s new secure deposit service is!
