Increase/decrease transparency with this Illustrator keyboard shortcut
For some odd reason Adobe removed the slider for the Transparency panel some time ago, and replaced it with a mostly useless drop-down menu of 10% increments. While many users certainly aren’t happy about this, they probably don’t know that you can adjust transparency more precisely than the drop-down menu allows using keyboard shortcuts.
With the object(s) you want to adjust selected, click in the Transparency panel’s amount input box and use the following keyboard shortcuts:
- Increase/Decrease Transparency by 1% = Up or Down Arrow Keys
- Increase/Decrease Transparency by 2% = Option + Up or Down Arrow Key
- Increase/Decrease Transparency by 10% = Shift + Up or Down Arrow Key

Excellent tips, Sig and feek!
Personally, I find the Apple Magic Mouse and Trackpad not very good for precision mousing. And the Kensington trackball (while great at page scrolling), just isn’t meant for that sort of thing.
That’s a good one feek. You don’t even have to click into the field. Just hover over it. Nice.
You can also Increase/Decrease values by scrolling up/down with your mouse
There is also one thing you can to and probably the fastest way:
In Edit>Keyboard Shortcuts there are under the Tools button, ready shortcuts for Transparency for 0% to 100%. Just add numbers to the shortcuts, like 1 for 10%, 2 for 20% and so on, 0 for 100%. If you like you could also add Shift+0 for 0% (not much point though).
When this is done you can simply hit the 5 to get 50% and so on. This is very fast and in less than a second you can try two to three different transparency values. Then if you need something in between fine tune with the shortcuts mentioned.
